Tech Tip: Exceeding Nameplate Current Isn’t Always a Problem

NEMA MG 1 states that the input in amperes shall not vary from the nameplate value by more than 10% for medium motors when operated at rated voltage, rated frequency and horsepower output (up to 500 hp/375 kW or 2 or 4 pole induction and synchronous machines). Before pulling a motor because of “high current,” consider if NEMA, IEC or other standards apply.
